Vicente López
received the Ph.D degree in quantum chemistry from the Universidad
Autónoma de Madrid (UAM), Madrid,
Spain, in 1981. From 1981 to 1983, he was a Research Fellow with the
California Institute of Technology,
Pasadena, and from 1984 to 1988, he was a Professor at the Department
of Chemical Physics, UAM. His research during those years was in theoretical
chemical physics and computational physics. In 1989, he joined the
Institute of Knowledge Engineering (IIC),
UAM, which is a research institute owned by UAM, IBM, and two other
major Spanish companies. At the IIC, he lead the neural network group
and became IIC technical director in 1993. At IIC, he was involved
in basic and applied research projects in real-time control, expert
systems, pattern recognition, and data mining. Later, he became Full
Professor of computer science at the Escuela Técnica Superior
de Informática, UAM. From 1996 to 2001, he developed an applied
research project for Grupo PRISA
to create R&D teams
in the areas of electronic publishing, internet communication, and
interactive digital TV. Since 2001, he has been Full Professor at the
Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona,
Spain, where he is the Director of the Chair Cátedra
Telefónica de Social Media and Vicepresident of the
Barcelona Media Centre d'Innovació
(an Innovation Center for the Media Industry). Since 1989, he has been an
active researcher in the field of artificial intelligence, neural
networks, optical computing, and information processing in natural
systems. He is author of more than 50 research articles.
