Boris Bellalta is an Assistant Professor at Universitat Pompeu Fabra since 2007. He obtained his BSc degree on Telecommunications Engineering from the Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya in 2002 and the PhD in Information and Communication Technologies from the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in 2007. In 2005 he was a visiting researcher at the Politecnico di Torino.
His research interests are in the area of communication networks, with emphasis on the design and performance evaluation of medium access control (MAC) protocols for Wireless Networks. There are many open research challenges to be addressed in this area, mainly because the number of communicating objects and new applications that use the unlicensed radio bands to send and receive data is increasing every day. These objects range from small sensors that transmit sporadically, to High Definition audio/video players that require a large bandwidth, or to Wifi smart-phones and laptops, which access the Internet through deployed Access Points or just communicate amongst themselves in an ad-hoc fashion. In such crowded and heterogeneous scenario, where multiple different wireless networks coexist, new principles such as adaptation to a high-dynamic environment and the ability to cooperate with others have to be considered in the design of new communication protocols to achieve an efficient use of the spectrum resources. Specifically, Boris's research focuses on the design of new MAC protocols for Wireless Networks that efficiently exploit some of the most recent advances in wireless communications, like spatial multiplexing and dynamic spectrum access techniques, as well as implement novel distributed cooperative mechanisms.
The results from his research have been published in more than 50 international journal and conference papers, receiving five times the award to the best paper presented in the conference (EUNICE'09, WWIC'09, ISWCS'09 and MACOM'10-11). In addition, he has two invited papers in international conferences (IEEE VTC'09-spring and ICUMT'10).
Boris Bellalta is currently involved in several international and national research projects about Wireless Networks. These projects include the COST action WINEMO (Wireless Networks for Mobile Objects), where he chairs the working group about 'Protocol engineering, Cross-layering and Cooperation' and the Consolider project COMONSENS (Foundations and Methodologies for Future Communication and Sensor Networks).
Boris Bellalta is member of the IEEE. He is a guest-editor in various renowned journals in the area of wireless communication and networking, and he has been editor of several conference proceedings books. He is the vice-general chair of the International Workshop on Multiple Access Communications, which in 2012 will celebrate its 5-th edition. Besides that, he has organized several special sessions and served as a technical committee member in multiple international conferences.
